Includes five plastic Cromwell tanks, one plastic British tank commander sprue and one decal sheet.

The Cromwell was the product of further development of British cruiser tanks designed to replace the Crusader, which had proved to be under armoured and mechanically unreliable during the fighting in North Africa.

After a number of designs had been submitted, it was soon realised that the current British built tank engine (the Liberty) was not up to the task of powering a tank heavier than the Crusader. A new engine based on the Rolls-Royce Merlin aircraft engine was designed to replace it. The new Meteor engine had approximately 600 hp (447 kW), double that of the Liberty.

Cruiser Weights: The Evolution of the British Cruiser Tank

Cruiser tanks were designed with speed in mind. Their role was to break through the gaps created by the infantry and Infantry tanks. For more on the history of Cruiser tanks, check out this article by Wayne Turner.

Cromwell IV
The Cromwell had a top speed of 32 mph (51 kph), though if ungoverned it was as high as 40 mph (64 kph) and was considered the fastest British tank in Service.

The Cromwell IV CS

The Cromwell VI CS (close support) variant was fitted with the OQF 95mm howitzer, enabling it to offer rapid and accurate fire support. The Cromwell VI CS is a versatile weapon, offering a squadron the ability to quickly knock out enemy gun nests or to put down a smoke screen to allow the fast Cromwells to close with the enemy in relative safety.

The Centaur

Although it had been established that a tank as heavy as the Cromwell needed the powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine to function as designed, initially all of the available engines were required for aircraft production. So in the interim, an underpowered version designated the A27L, only powered by the Liberty engine, was produced, and named the Centaur.

Above: You can field Centaurs in a Royal Marine Support Platoon in support of your Normandy Commando company from OverlordThe Centaur versions landed in Normandy by the Royal Marines had the hull machine-gun port sealed as part of the waterproofing process. The hull front piece with a plate instead of a machine-gun mount can be used to represent this.

The Liberty engine is underpowered for the Centaur's weight, so it moves as a Standard Tank and is Unreliable.
